One Wall Leads to Three: A Phased Grand Ledge Project in the UK

Alongside a driveway in Congleton, Cheshire, a significant slope called for a retaining wall capable of navigating both a sweeping radius and substantial elevation changes. The property owner found that flexibility in Grand Ledge, offered by local Rosetta Hardscapes producer and installer WOTBLOCK.

Phase one includes approximately 50 m (164 ft) of walling, averaging around 2 m (6.6 ft) high. As the wall travels across the slope, it follows a broad curve while stepping upward in increments of approximately 300 mm (1 ft).

And the first phase was only the beginning. After seeing the installation take shape and experiencing how the WOTBLOCK crew operated on-site, the project owner decided to expand the project with at least two additional walls across two more levels.

The Challenge: Following a Significant Slope

The customer initially approached WOTBLOCK while considering gabion baskets for the property. After visiting the site, the WOTBLOCK team proposed a Grand Ledge wall and brought samples for the customer to consider.

The site presented an important design challenge. Rather than a straight wall at a consistent elevation, the installation needed to follow a wide radius alongside the driveway while climbing a significant slope. As the wall gained elevation, it stepped upward at approximately 300 mm (1 ft) increments.

The combination of curvature, elevation changes, and the overall scale of the wall made flexibility a central consideration.

The Solution: Curving and Stepping with the Site

Grand Ledge is a large-format precast modular block that doesn’t sacrifice versatility for size, making it as effective for subtle contours as it is for long straight runs.

The first phase called for approximately 50 m (164 ft) of walling at an average height of roughly 2 m (6.6 ft). Instead of limiting the project to straight runs, the system gave the team the flexibility needed to maintain the sweeping curve as the installation progressed uphill.

The Project: Phase One Becomes Something Bigger

The original plan centered on the first 50 m (164 ft) retaining wall. But as construction progressed, the customer had the opportunity to see both the Grand Ledge wall and WOTBLOCK's installation process firsthand.

After witnessing the WOTBLOCK crew’s professionalism and the way it managed the installation of the first wall, the customer opted to expand the project.

Phase one gave way to phases two and three, with garden walls installed across two additional levels of the property.

What began as a single retaining wall along a challenging driveway slope grew into a much larger, multiphase Grand Ledge installation featuring two additional garden walls.
